John May joined the firm in 1981 and became a partner in 1987. Throughout his tenure at the firm, John has represented clients in the area of professional malpractice including attorneys, accountants, insurance agents and title agents. John has also represented attorneys in disciplinary matters before the DC Board of Professional Responsibility. His experience in this area includes service as a member, and subsequently as a chairman, of a hearing committee for the D.C. Board on Professional Responsibility—the adjudicatory body for the D.C. attorney disciplinary system. John retired and assumed Senior Counsel status as of January 1, 2019.
John has shared the breadth of his knowledge with others through continuing legal education lectures and by serving as an Adjunct Professor for fourteen years at the American University Washington College of Law on the topic of legal ethics. Notably, John has lectured on ethics and legal malpractice for the D.C. Bar, the Virginia Bar, Georgetown University Law Center, American University Law School, and the Ethics Resource Center, among others.
John spent many years as an actor and singer in community theater. Although many have practiced at the Supreme Court, he is one of the few attorneys who has actually performed there.
